xhtml-basic vs html32

So I've been using MDBF for a while and I can't quite wrap my brain around some weird issues I have with the preferredRenderingType.  On my Blackberry 9000 I can switch between the two and even though the default is xhtml-basic, it definitely renders better as html32.  There's a lot of really annoying differences like borders around image links or not tables when I keep it at xhtml-basic so I'm tempted to just switch every xhmtl-basic device over to html32.  Can someone explain why some phones seem arbitrarily set to this instead of html32?  Thanks!

Edit:  Also, why is the BlackBerry 9000 javascript set to false?  It looks like all the other BlackBerry devices say true, but it's set as false at line 93315.
