51Degrees adds more complexity than is needed for the project. The beauty of the MDB file is that all you need to get it to work is drop it in. It is also faster than the 51Degrees solution. I'd love to see the original developers release their code so that the project could continue.

Hello fpdavis, I have also been looking around to see if there was anyone who is still maintaining the database or if there is any tool that can convert WURFL into MDBF format. Yes, I agree this method is really simple and easy when compared to the other methods. Please contact me if you have some suggestions or if you would like to talk more about it.

Has anyone written a tool to convert/import WURFL into MDBF format? Such a tool would keep the MDBF current and relevant. I realize that the WURFL format provides for more functionality, but for many, we just need the quick and easy basics without a lot of overhead.

Please take a look at http://51degrees.codeplex.com/. It is an ASP.NET open source module which detects mobile devices and provides auto redirection to mobile optimized pages when request is coming from mobile device. It makes use of WURFL mobile device database. For redirection there is no need to modify existing ASP.NET web application pages.

Below is sample web.config settings to show how easy it is to implement mobile detection and rediection without modifying any of your existing asp.net web pages.

Instead of using MDBF please use http://51degrees.codeplex.com/. In this example MobileDeviceManufacturer is used as the property. This properties are exposed through the HttpRequest classes Browser property. Both WURFL capabilities and ASP.NET Browser properties can be used with the property attribute. If none of the <locations> match and the requesting device is a mobile device then the mobileHomePageUrl will be used.

I recommend you use WURFL using 51degrees api. In mdbf I think you can not control how create mobile capability from user agent. So consumer has to navigate in web page. Anyway this project is dead.

Would it be possible to use this browser file in a web service? I'd like to pass the user agent string from another web site and use this file in the web service to determine if the device is mobile or not. I have just started with VS 2010 but does .NET 4.0 have alot of this browser file installed by default or is this still a better source for device capabilities?

I've incorporated the Mobi code into my .Net application and provided a redirect to a mobile page if a phone device is used. It works consistently on the Blackberry Bold Simulator. When I bring up my site on my real phone (also a Blackberry Bold), the mobile will come up for a while but than it reverts back to the non mobile page. It seems as though if there is a server error (500) when trying to view the mobile page on the phone, the browser reverts back to the full page.

Any ideas?

we are using this for our mobile redirection in our App, What will happen to the .browser file updates post Aug 24th.

Do we have to rely on .Net Service packs for future upades to browser files. ?

Or is there an alternative site which gives us a similar mdbf browser file which doesnt need any code changes from our side.

Does anyone have working examples of using the Mobile Device Browser File to create a website redirect to a mobile website? I've tried to take what's here and make this work, but I just haven't had much luck. I'm working in VB.

We would like to automate the download and installation of the latest Stable browser definition file from Codeplex or another repository on a regular basis.

Is there any mechanism for publishing updated files, e.g. via RSS or other protocol that would enable detection, download and installation of the current stable release?

Any ideas or extant solutions would be most helpful.

http://www.51degrees.mobi/ provides Microsoft .NET based open source and a free API to detect mobile devices using WURFL as the primary source of device information. This would help .NET developers to integrate mobile devices with their existing and future web sites.

We are in the process of having our open source code on Codeplex in a couple of weeks.
